ERN Rare-Liver on-demand Webinar: Liver transplantation and vascular liver disorders

Description

This joint VALDIG-ERN-EASL webinar, held on 13 September 2023, aims to clarify some of the below points, while gathering a panel of experts in the field and promoting vivid discussion in order to improve care for these rare and somehow difficult-to-treat patients.

Even though vascular liver disorders are rare reported events, liver transplantation may be considered when acute liver failure occurs, as for acute Budd-chiari syndrome, or complications of portal hypertension arise as in the context of porto-sinusoidal vascular liver disorder. Yet, few data exist considering indications and outcomes of liver transplantation in these and other rare vascular liver disorders.

Filipe Nery, MD PhD, is an internal medicine graduate hospital assistant and hepatologist. Dedicated in particular to the study of vascular liver diseases, being currently a member of the Steering Committee of VALDIG – Vascular Liver Disease Interest Group. His PhD was conducted over the subject of portal vein thrombosis in cirrhosis. He is professor at the Immuno-Physiology and Pharmacology Department of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Porto University.

Speakers

	Barbara Wildhaber was born in Switzerland in 1969. She graduated from the University of Zurich in 1994 and then trained in paediatric surgery in Switzerland, the United States and South Africa and obtained her diploma as a specialized paediatric surgeon in 2005. She then further specialized in paediatric hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation in Paris and Geneva. In 2010, she was appointed professor at the faculty of medicine at the University of Geneva, head of the division of paediatric surgery and surgical director of the Swiss Pediatric Liver Centre at the Geneva University Hospitals. In 2014, she was further designated director of the University Centre of Pediatric Surgery of Western Switzerland, which pools expertise in paediatric surgery from the French part of the country. In the same year, she was appointed professor at the faculty of biology and medicine at the University of Lausanne. Within academia, Barbara Wildhaber has led numerous research projects in her areas of expertise. She sits on the executive boards of various scientific journals, foundations and scholarly associations, including the Swiss Academy of Medical Science and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
	Paul J. Thuluvath, M.D., is the Medical Director of The Institute for Digestive Health & Liver Disease and the Chief of Gastroenterology at the Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and the Director of the University of Maryland Advanced Hepatology Network at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore. Dr. Thuluvath has held various senior leadership positions, including Medical Director of Liver Transplantation and the Chief of Hepatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before his current position. Dr. Thuluvath received his medical degree from the St. Johns Academy of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, India, and his doctorate from the University of Sheffield School of Medicine, England. He completed fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Cambridge University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, and the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases. Dr. Thuluvath has published more than 350 peer reviewed papers and book chapters; edited seven textbooks in the field of gastroenterology and liver diseases including 2 books, published by Johns Hopkins Press, for patients with liver disease. Dr. Thuluvath has a specialized interest in liver transplantation and has a research interest in liver transplant outcomes.
	Juan Carlos García-Págan (Hospital Clínico de Barcelona)
	Audrey Coilly is Professor of Hepatology. She is the director of the medical program of liver transplantation and head of the hepatology department, Centre Hepato-Biliaire, Paul Brousse Hospital, APHP, France. She is a member of the Medical School of Paris-Saclay University. She currently leads one team of the Inserm unit 1193 “Physiopathogenesis and Treatment of Liver Diseases”, led by Pr Duclos-Vallée. She is a member of several national and international learned societies of Hepatology and Liver Transplantation. She is author of more than 100 publications dedicated to liver transplantation, including several multicenter collaborative, national and international studies and guidelines, resulting in 3153 citations (H index 27). Audrey Coilly has also given, for the last ten years, around one hundred national and international inviting lectures and has chaired numerous sessions in different meetings. Since 2021, she coordinates one of the special groups of interest of the ILTS interesting in Acute Liver Failure. Her current topics of interest and research are viral hepatitis, liver transplantation for viral hepatitis, but also acute liver failure of unknown cause, vascular liver disease and metabolic diseases.
