Overview

  • Learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of common endoscopic procedures including diagnostic gastroscopy, colonoscopy, EUS, and capsule endoscopy, with a focus on their application in patients with liver disease
  • Learners will learn to identify and differentiate between various stages of liver disease, including compensated and decompensated cirrhosis, and understand the considerations and challenges in performing endoscopic procedures in these patients
  • Learners will explore the pharmacological considerations and implications of sedation and analgesia in patients with liver disease, including the risks of drug-induced exacerbation of minimal hepatic encephalopathy
  • Learners will develop proficiency in identifying, preventing, grading, and managing adverse events associated with endoscopic procedures in patients with liver disease, with a focus on best practices and quality criteria
  • Learners will acquire in-depth knowledge of the screening, prophylaxis, and management of variceal bleeding in patients with portal hypertension, including the role of non-selective beta-blockers, endoscopic variceal ligation, and acute bleeding management strategies
  • Learners will understand the endoscopic management of anastomotic biliary strictures, ischemic cholangiopathy, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and other cholangiopathies in the context of liver transplantation and non-transplant-related settings

    Course Director

    Prof. Dr Sven Francque is currently the EASL Educational Councillor and Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the University Hospital Antwerp and Full Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Antwerp in Belgium. He has a longstanding interest and expertise in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and conducted basic research focusing on the vascular changes in steatosis and their contribution to disease progression. His research unit continues to study pathophysiological mechanisms of NASH. He also conducts clinical research, and his unit is a partner in several research consortia supported by the European Commission. He and his unit participate in most of the clinical trials in the field, and he is a scientific committee member involved in the design of several phase 2 and one of the current phase 3 trials in NAFLD. He is a senior clinical researcher for the Research Fund of the Flemish government. He is board member of several scientific societies and currently also scientific coordinator of the Belgian week of Gastroenterology. Prof. Dr Francque obtained his MD at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, in 1994 and was subsequently trained in internal medicine and in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Antwerp University Hospital, Belgium and at the Department of Hepatology of the Beaujon hospital, Clichy, France.

    Course Director

    Istvan Hritz is associate professor and head of Division of Interventional Gastroenterology at the Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. His main interest is the gastrointestinal endoscopy, particularly diagnostic and therapeutic pancreato-biliary endoscopy. He serves as the director of postgraduate education program of gastroenterology, ERCP and EUS at Semmelweis University. Doctor Hritz has been also involved in international endoscopic educational activities as the chair of the Education Committee and member of the governing board of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). He has been a hands-on trainer in endoscopy as well as an active member of the Guidelines- and Scientific Committee of ESGE. His aim is to contribute in dissemination of the up-to-date knowledge, the guidelines as well as the quality assessment through the training and educational activities of the ESGE into daily practice.

    Hannah Van Malenstein studied medicine at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands) and obtained her degree in 2007. She continued her academic path with a PhD in Hepatology at the University Hospital Leuven (Belgium), where her research focused on hepatocellular carcinoma with the title "Determination of Prognosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: The Role of Adaptive Molecular Mechanisms to Microenvironmental Factors." After her PhD, Hannah completed my internal medicine and gastroenterology training in 2017. Prof. Van Malenstein's specific areas of expertise cover pancreatic and biliary disease and hepatology, including liver transplantation. Her focus on diagnostic and therapeutic HPB endoscopy with EUS and ERCP. Hannah is actively involved in the European endoscopy society ESGE, and in different national societies such as the Flemish Gastroenterology society (VVGE) and the Belgian Pancreatic Club.

    Dr Gavin Johnson is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at University London College Hospitals, The Royal Free Hospital and Cleveland Clinic London and a Honorary Professor in Medical Education at UCL. His main clinical practice is in ERCP, EUS and pancreaticobiliary medicine, and his main research interest is in Medical Education and assessment. He has a Masters and Medical Doctorate in Medical Education from work in assessment of postgraduate training with the Royal College of Physicians of London. He is the Director of Undergraduate Education at UCL Hospitals. Dr Johnson serves on the Quality Assurance in Training group of JAG, and leads on UK ERCP and EUS accreditation. He has led working groups on ERCP, cholangioscopy and EUS for ESGE and set up numerous gastroenterology and endoscopy training courses at UCL.

    Dr. Cárdenas is an Attending Physician & Consultant at the Institute of Digestive Diseases at Hospital Clinic and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at Boston University Medical Center in Boston, a Research Fellowship in Hepatology at Hospital Clinic and the University of Barcelona, and a Clinical Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). He also completed an Advanced Hepatology Fellowship and an Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship at BIDMC and HMS. In addition, he completed a Master’s Degree in Clinical Investigation at HMS and MIT and his Doctoral Thesis (Ph.D.) at the University of Barcelona. His main expertise and research interests are cirrhosis and its complications, interventional procedures in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension, and biliary complications in liver transplant recipients.

    Wim Laleman is staff member of the division of Liver & Biliopancreatic disorders and Liver Transplantation of the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University Hospitals Leuven and appointed full professor at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium. He qualified as gastroenterologist-hepatologist and GI endoscopy in 2008 and has a focus on complications of cirrhosis, in particular portal hypertension and acute-on-chronic liver failure, diagnosis and management of liver and biliopancreatic disorders, medical management of liver transplantation patients and advanced therapeutic biliopancreatic endoscopy. He is currently steering committee member of the BAVENO CONSORTIUM and EASL-CLIF consortium and co-participant in the HORIZON 2020-funded MICROB-PREDICT project. In addition, he serves as associate editor in the Journal of Hepatology.
